Josh then switched to the 24″ pitch FS and began his run. Over time – he was able to raise the engine by one-half inch. At that setting the boat ran 64.9 mph at 6050 rpm. I am new to the forum and have a 2002 Yam 115 EFI 4 stroke on a 02 hurricane 19 ft deck boat. I have had the boat for about 4 years and it has never idled quite right (stalls when coming off high RPM) Recently it began to loose RPM and surge. It has gotten worse and will no longer plane out and sounds like it is missing at high RPM, under load.

These 8.1's will run fine on 7 cylinders, WOT won't go to max. though. On 6 cylinders I couldn't pass 3,000. No load in neutral she'll seem like nothings wrong.

after that load boat as heavy as you would nomally use it full fuel watter passengers ect and when fully warmed up check your wot or wide open throttle rpm under load the target rpm is 3150 fully loaded. if you cant make atleast 3100 rpm when fully loaded you should take your props to a good prop shop and tell them to repitch so you can acchive the nessecary rpms.

I read online that a dirty air filter will sometimes cause this because the engine is lacking airflow, so the ECU limits the RPM so you don't blow your engine.
